exhibition design

My career as a designer began at the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture* in Washington, DC. Free access to museums molded me throughout my childhood in Montgomery County, Maryland—just a short subway ride away from the heart of American education and politics. When it came time to find my first design opportunity, the legacy and reputation of this museum, also known as NMAAHC, propelled it to the top of my list.

Tip Tap | 2024

Museums thrive on the generous donations of visitors and important stakeholders. NMAAHC needed a more intuitive way to allow visitors to give, so I designed graphics to showcase the museum's latest implementation, Tip Tap.

Spirit in the Dark | 2022

As a Design Support Contractor, I worked with curators and fabricators to realize the Spirit in the Dark* exhibition. The show illustrates the inextricable link between religion and activism within the last century of Black American history. Developing the color scheme, deciding on exhibition materials, and selecting typography were at the heart of my design process.

I developed a lightbeam motif for the section labels, contrasting against the selected deep blue wall color. The gold-backed frosted acrylic added a warm glow to the gallery. You can read my feature on Every Day Matters here.*

Highlights of the NMAAHC Library Collection | 2021

I arranged a case layout for the first time with Highlights* as an intern at NMAAHC. I decided on the object placements and worked on the informational panel designs. I took inspiration from one of the standout features in the exhibition, a book entitled, Harriet: The Moses of Her People.

As of September 2024, the case is still available for viewing on the second floor of the museum.
